I had heard Margot Adler on NPR, I think, as a reporter. The Tip World newsletter mentioned her and "The Hour Of The Wolf".I read sci-fi along with science mags and am interested in astronomy so your web site is a natural for me.Thanks for the cool web site.I wish I could hear you on the web the same way I can archive the past programs of"WE'RE SCIENCE",also a radio show.I can't receive FM signals from NY here in North Carolina. Unfortunately, this is a borrowed account/computer acces- so I can't reveal the E-mail address, But : I listen virtually every Friday/saturday- as I work a third shift. @ Bel-Ray Lubricant's QC lab at their factory in Farmingdale NJ..(In Monmouth county NJ- 10 miles west of Asbury Park). We make Motorcycle oils, various products for Mining Equipment, greases, Hydraulic fluids etc..) Great show, mostly every night. I seldom call in-as I am supposed to be working, not going outside to use my cell-phone (can't call from inside the building; -as there is a 'long-distance lock-out' on company phones nowadays...)But; I did manage to get in to the program to suggest some "reading-for-kids" (Yevgeny Zamiyatin's dark utopian novel :"WE", and the Norman Spinrad satire/fantasy "Iron Dream") You have a remarkable show- but I do admit to a certain fondness of the good-old-days, (of my youth - late 1960-mid 1970's - I'm 43..)when SF literary works(and the readers)were in a sort of a "ghetto-of-the-initiates".. we even had a sort of club in grammer school for a time- Of course- nearly all of my contemporaries were big SFfans- so it was a far-spread/majority secret-sect. I was first turned-on to SF by he old 1950-1960's "Adventures of Tom Swift Jr" books, and I recently was able to get a few of the OLDER 1912 vintage "Tom Swift" serial novels... ( this was "Tom Jr's Father in the later series) Just when were SF-heads NOT really "minority-mainstream" ?

Hi! I like your site, and the show sounds interesting... unfortunately I'm not sure I'd be able to catch it since I'm in a different area (Canada). :( The index of fantasy and sci-fi writings on-line is a great idea, and I was wondering how one can get their site added. (I have a fantasy/sci-fi novel-in-progress at http://www.crosswinds.net/~bloodoftherose which I'd be interested in having in the index if possible.)

anyway, had a fun time looking around here! :)

Hi Jim !!!! This is Jim the Lovecraft fan checking in!!! Sorry that I have not calling in but job committments and other activities are keeping me quite busy. So far I have read Harry Turtledove's How Few Remain, The Great War (The American Front & Walk in Hell) Harry Harrisons Stars and Stripes Forever. Say what you want about Turtledove, he does his homework as my former history teacher Clint Taylor can attestify. My only complaint with How Few Remain is that Louis Riel who was alive during this period (The 1880'S )was not utilised. Also since you are a lover of penguins, did you know there is a Fleetwood Mac website called The Penguin ? Even if you don't follow the band like I do, the graphics will definetly kepp you happy. There is even a game with sliding penguin panels!!!!! Check it out. Lastly Jim, I am getting a pc soon but in the meantime you will have to contact me via snail mail at the following add- ress: Jim Kurdyla P.O. BOX 562 CRANFORD, N.J. 07016

dear jim, last week's guest, m., has a fantastic reading voice, but not rushed. sexy, too. IF ONLY COMPUTERS COULD TALK...... BUT, MAIN ISSUE; IF ANYTHING, THE UNDERPINNING TO 'STAR WARS' IS THE FORBIDDEN SCIENCE OF SF, POLITICAL SCIENCE IF NOT HISTORICAL POLITICAL SCIENCE--MY IDEOLOGY AGAINST YOUR IDEOLOGY--ECHOES OF THE GLOBALIST AMERICAN REVOLUTION, WORLD WARS, AND THE FALL OF ROME FROM EMPIRE AND FROM REPUBLIC TO EMPIRE, ETC., MIRROR-MIRRORED. WE REJECT IT BECAUSE IT HITS TOO CLOSE TO HOME; THE DARKFORCE REPUBLICSLAYING ROMAN EMPIREBUILDING LUST FOR WEALTH AND POWER IS CONSUMING AMERICA--AND EVEN PACIFICA. --IN OTHER WORDS, STURGEON'S LAW IS A BRAIN CANCER. TUNNEL VISION FOR FUN AND PROFIT--HELL THE COSTS--HELPS..... THE ONLY OPEN SF WRITER ABOUT IT WAS DR. ASIMOV--WHO LOVED THE 1776-PRINCIPLES THIS COUNTRY VERY MUCH; WHO WOULD HAVE RATHER WRITTEN STORIES ABOUT GALACTIC DEMOCRACIES THAN GALACTIC EMPIRES, BUT--STUCK IN A PIGEONHOLE NO MATTER HOW SUCCESSFUL HE GOT--STILL HAD TO EAT AND SUPPORT HIS FAMILY. ... A HOSTAGE. LOOK AT WHAT HAPPENED TO ALL THE YOUNG REBELS, NOW CAST EXTRAS ON 'DILBERT,' WRITERS AND EDITORS ALIKE. WHAT ABOUT THE DARKSIDE OF SF NEVER REALLY ADDRESSED/ a eunech's literary society at best. all brainwashing with our survival as hostage--why no NEW RENAISSANCE OF SF FOR THE MILLENNIUM AS MOST EXPECTED. WE'RE LIKE WWII SF FANS IN NAZI GERMANY, WHO POSSIBLY HAD THEIR OWN 'HOUR OF THE WOLF' AND FANDOM OF A KIND, WITH THE SAME BLINDERS ON,

It is a fantastic website. I especially appreciate the links to science fiction and fantasy texts online, as well as the interviews by Jim Freund with science fiction luminaries. It's been some time since I was able to be sufficiently awake at 5 a.m. on Saturday morning to take in and absorb what I hear on the show, but I have really good memories of shows that I heard when I was more alert at that time of the morning, a very sweet time, early Saturday morning after a week of work. I look forward to energizing myself enough to be alert and awake enough to start to tune in again to the live show. Thanks for being there and providing these services...

I enjoy the manner of presentation, you and your guests are both in touch with the real world and use SF as a means of telling allegories of historical and preset day realities. I wish as many call in's were equally as coherent. I have a life which is why I tape the show and listen to it later.

Greetings from Islamabad, Pakistan.

I'll listen to the show over the internet (when the gods and PakTel allow) now that I've found the sites to do so. I just unearthed a great cassette tape of a Marathon in '83 (I think) with a lot of Techy type clips. Took me back a long ways.

email me when you have a chance and we'll exchange updates.

Ben PS Lowry and I celebrated 20 yrs of marriage this year--wish I had taken all those bets back then...

Hay Jim.I'm talking through the voice of Ms.Arganbright due to the fact that I have no computer at this time and have been far removed from my New Jersey home for about a year this july.I miss 'BAI and defitnately "Hour of the Wolf".I'm Steve Williams, now a Texas resident and secret liason of a very nice lady whose bigoted brother donated Her computer and probabally has means to monitor any correspondence she may have. She's not Knowledgeable about anything in the world about her.Which is where you've come in.I've been reading "The Hobbit" to her,as I had to my two children when they were younger;in hopes that this will lead them to the "Trilogy" in their time. I am trying to find how i can get this computer to receive broadcasts of the station;at least by New Years Eve to hear or find a way to send a pledge for a copy of that masterful reading of "The Counsel of Elrond":Which had got me enthraled at the age of 48,as a bad recording that took me a couple of months to decipher, only to loose on the Greyhound bus trip to these strange lands. Enough for now;for you've got plenty of work I know. I'll try to stay linked with your sites to inform you of the community radio station I'm working with;trying to "palm" my "short story Dreams" on.

Can't wait to tune in again in this cyber age.

Steve

loyal listener for over 25 years, suddenly I have lost the feed. I live in new paltz, ny. and used to get it via my cable tv connection. where ever they transmit from the cable company probably does not receive your signal any more, (I can barely hear thru the static). Why? How can I receive the show via the internet? how can I record it for later listening..... thanx ken

if the quality of programming at "BAI" for the past two years was graphed, it would look like a chart of the nasdaq for the same period.

been listening for more years than i can remember. I have listened to BAI since my HS social studies teacher cam out of the comunist closet. I appreciated the issue orientation and the intellectual approach to issues and entertainment.I like the out of the mainstream focus push away the publicisct.

I have been listening for about a year, and really enjoy the program. Science is not my strong suit, but I was a lit major, and over the years have enjoyed some of Jules Verne, to begin with, all those memorable films from days of yore, etc. More recently, someone told me that I should take a look at Heinlein's work -- and one thing leads to another. I have just finished reading selections from Asimov's first two volumes of Hugo award winners, and I really liked Poul Anderson, RIP. The anthologies are very helpful in finding necessary selections to read, and so are web sites like yours. I do not own a computer, but they just gave me one at work, with Yahoo for free, so it did not take long before I found your page. I specifically found your show on Saturday morning because a mutual friend from the James Joyce Society introduced me to Mr Simon Loekle -- so in finding him, I stumbled onto you, not unlike finding The Howling Man held captive by John Carradine and the rest of the monks! A moment ago I read your interview with Greg Bear (Anderson's son in law, I believe), and aside from the creative aspect of the writings themselves, I am very favorably impressed with some of the political ramifications of the sci-fi community. I am rather on the conservative side, but am willing to put some of my little bit of money where your mouth is, therefore took out a membership in February, and bought a gift subscription for my best liberal friend. I will now out myself and say that I am a Catholic and a freemason, so I am always delighted when my enthusiasm, my loves, and my loyalties are stretched to take in more territory. Belloc said 'tis "a glittering and pleasant, but changing and dangerous world" we live in, and I truly hope that the station retains its diversity and freedom. As a listener, I used only to tune in to Rothenberg and Goreman -- and for a long time i was not happy with what I was hearing, but eventually I became aclimitised. If you are a conservative listener, it is possible sometimes to feel like the Japanese general at the end of "Gate of Hell." You get stung quite a lot, but the wounds don't seem to be mortal. Bears discover fire, indeed....Warm regards, Bill.

Greetings,I'm preparing to write my master's thesis on how women are depicted in science fiction film - not fantasy or horror, or tv series. I came to this website looking for some information for my thesis. I thought first I would need a definition of science fiction distinct from other genres and sub or complementary categories (like fantasy, etc.)Any suggestions? Thanks. Andrea
